Maggie Thornton, Curator
Moved to Tewkesbury from Kent in 2002. Not long after she arrived in Tewkesbury Maggie and her Aunt, Joy visited the Town museum. Whilst looking around they were chatting about how sad and neglected the museum was. The Chairman of the trustees was listening to them and came over and introduced himself and invited them to volunteer and help revive the museum. Maggie volunteered and has been here ever since. Working for a couple of years as a volunteer and eventually taking her degree in Museum Studies at Leicester University and becoming the museum’s curator.
The Trustees of the Museum are local people freely giving their time and skills, for this wonderful community asset.
The Town Council appoints four Trustees, not necessarily serving Councillors, and the Trustee body appoints the remaining three. Trustees are also volunteers. It’s a hands-on role, but the primary responsibility is to manage the museum, setting standards of governance, its strategic direction, with advice from the Curator, and securing the funds to maintain solvency.
