Footsteps of Endurance
Ernest Shackleton’s heroic Antarctic expedition.

One of the great stories of survival. Their ship crushed, marooned on melting ice, Shackleton’s 1914 Antarctic expedition faced a slow death. Yet, in the last great Antarctic adventure, “the Boss” and 27 men trekked and sailed 300 miles to Elephant Island, from where Shackleton and a small crew sailed a lifeboat 800 miles to South Georgia to seek help.
Tewkesbury’s own Antarctic explorer, who had previously served with Shackleton and his rival, Scott, later said: “Scott for scientific method, Amundsen for speed and efficiency … but when disaster strikes and all hope is gone, get down on your knees and pray for Shackleton”
